Simon is a landscape painter based in the Cotswolds. As an observational artist, he makes drawings and paintings of rural and urban places. His work explores the landscape’s changing environment.
His drawings carry a frenetic energy – an immediacy that builds with each mark on the paper. With these marks he seeks to capture a transient moment in the landscape before it shifts or disappears.
In contrast, Simons’ oil paintings unfold more slowly. Where the drawings are urgent and immediate, the paintings are meditative and distilled – with delibrate brushstrokes they reveal a calmer contemplative landscape.
Having grown up in Gloucestershire and spending many years in Wales, his practice continues to be shaped by time outdoors, frequently drawing on location.
